Black Cemetery African American Heros Tour (2011)

Brooklyn, New York - On Saturday October 22, 2011 the brothers of Alpha Upsilon chapter, Brooklyn Omega, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. presented the Brooklyn community with a special treat before halloween.  Brooklyn’s Finest,  A Walk Through History, a walking tour of notable African-Americans buried at the Cypress Hills Cemetery. Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to enter Major League Baseball.  Arturo Schomburg, collector of African-American history and cultural artifacts. Nella Larsen, noted writer from the Harlem Renaissance. Ethel Cuff Black, one of the 22 founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. James McCune Smith, first African-American to earn a medical degree are among the dozens of famous people of color buried in Cypress Hills. Buses were provided to take the participants from Macon Street Library to and from the cemetery. The tour also included a reception at the library with light refreshments served to engage in conversation about the day’s event. Several other organizations participated in the event among them Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter-Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Brooklyn Public Library, and We Make Us Better. The brothers of Alpha Upsilon who organized and participated in this event were Bro. Glenn Chapman (AU 05), Bro. Robert Cornegay (AU 07), Bro. Ray Nixon (KN 86) and Bro. Charles L. Hayden (Tau Psi 71). This was the second year for this event and the brothers look forward to it become bigger and better in the coming years.

THE BRIDGE BUILDER

An old man going a lone highway
came at the evening, cold and gray,
to a chasm vast and wide and steep,
with waters rolling cold and deep.
The old man crossed in twilight dim,
the sullen stream had no fears for him;
but he turned when safe on the other side,
and built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man " said a fellow pilgrim near;
you are wasting your strength with building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
you never again will pass- this way.
You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
"Why build you this bridge at eventide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said.
"There followeth after me today
a youth whose feet must pass this way.
The chasm that was as naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be;
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim-
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."
